    USAGE:
    (1.) Hardly относится к группе наречий степени с отрицательным значением. К этой же группе относятся наречия almost, little, few, seldom. В предложении с hardly отрицательная форма глагола не употребляется, но предложение может быть усилено оборотом at all: He hardly slept at all. Он почти не спал. Предложения с этими наречиями, оставаясь по форме утвердительными, по своему значению предполагают отрицание, которое в русском языке часто выражено оборотом почти не, чуть не, едва: He hardly said a word. Он не сказал почти ни слова. Hardly в предложении обычно стоит перед основным глаголом. Предложения с hardly (и другими наречиями этой группы) часто включают модальный глагол can и слова any, anything, anybody, соответствующие русским "почти ничего (никто)": He could hardly see anything (he saw almost nothing). Он почти ничего не видел. (2.) При построении вопросительного предложения обычно употребляется разделительный вопрос с утвердительной, а не отрицательной вопросной частью: You hardly ever worry, do you? Вы ведь никогда не беспокоитесь, не так ли? (3.) Предложения с hardly 2. часто употребляются с придаточными предложениями времени, которые вводятся союзом when; в этих случаях глагол в главном предложении стоит в форме Past Perfect: I had hardly closed my eyes when the telephone rang. Не успел я сомкнуть глаза, как зазвонил телефон. (4.) See almost, adv; USAGE (1.), (2.), (3.), (4.), (5.), (9.), (10.), (11).. (5.) See always, adv; USAGE (4.).
